Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Labour Party Denzil Douglas |
(Basseterre; St. Kitts): The political climate in St. Kitts has seen some significant changes and this has led many to ask the question of whether political elections are near.
Citizens have been transformed from observers to political analysts as they joust to see who can predict when the exact period for elections will be.
In speaking with supporters of the ruling Labour Party, the general consensus is that the opposition is using this period to give citizens a false alarm that elections are near.
"That could never be. Knowledgeable persons who monitor the political framework of the island know that elections are constitutionally due by 2009, and this indicates that it is too early then," revealed one Labour party activist.
"Mid term elections are only called when there is serious crisis in a country and the island is politically and economically stable," he added.
He concluded by saying that the opposition was just using the alarm to put nationals unnecessarily on the edge.
Supporters of the People's Action Movement (PAM) are certain that elections are imminent in the future.

The leader of the opposition party People's Action Movement Lindsay Grant |
To support their claims they say that the increased political campaigning by the Labour Party and the increased level of dissatisfaction citizens have with the ruling Party has generated immense pressure, forcing them to call an early elections.
The topic has been a very prevalent one on the street and even those who wish to ignore it are forced to cast occasional glances at the situation.
Is election near? Will the Prime Minister call for a premature dissolving of Parliament? Are the candidates ready for the competition at the poles?
Both major parties have not yet disclosed their full slate of candidates for any upcoming elections so it is left to be seen how prepared they are.
The question still is in the air and remains to be answered. Will elections be called soon?
