St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. The Hon. Denzil Douglas says his Government continues to work assiduously to ensure that affordable and comfortable homes are available for the people of the twin island state.

The Prime Minister made the statement while addressing supporters of his ruling Labour Party following the culmination of the annual Labour Day March, at the Patsy Allers playfield, on Monday May 7th.

The Prime Minister revealed that approximately one thousand affordable homes will be made available to residents of the country very shortly.

The homes will be made available as a result of significant financial assistance from the Hugo Chavez government of Venezuela.

In addition to the building of these one thousand homes, the Prime Minister also disclosed that an initiative is being implemented to ensure that those persons who received starter homes could expand on them.

He noted that his government was mindful of the plight of the thousands of workers who were made redundant as a result of the closure of the sugar industry and his government was committed to ease their struggles with the making available of basic necessities, especially housing at very affordable rates.

The Labour Leader also took the opportunity to remind his supporters and other listeners of the tremendous development achieved by the country under his Labour Party administration, and noted that such was his Party's mandate- the facilitation of economic, social and infrastructural growth of the country.

He pledged his government's continued aim for success and took the opportunity to thank the public for their support of his Administration and noted that their support was the encouragement for his Party to continue performing.

He ended his brief remarks by soliciting three cheers for the Labour Party.

Prior to the Prime Minister's address a number of person took part in the annual Labour Day march, which commenced and culminated at the Patsy Allers playfield.

The march started late, as has become the custom, and as usual the numbers at the start were much fewer than when it wound its way through the streets of Basseterre.

By the time the march had made its way to New Town, the throng had grown much larger.
Labour supporters were rallied by Mrs. Eugenie Condor, a Party stalwart, who reminded them from "whence they came" and implored them to continue the positive movement of the Party.

As usual, Prime Minister Douglas, his Cabinet Ministers and members of the St. Kitts - Nevis Trades and Labour Union, were at the forefront of the march.

The march featured hundreds of young Labour cheerleaders, the majorettes, mocko jumbies, masquerades and a string band.

Another common feature of the march was the bus loads of senior citizens, who celebrated the achievements of the Labour Party.

The Labour Party is celebrating their 75th anniversary and the picnic following the march was inrecognition of this milestone.
