BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 22ND 2007 (CUOPM) - The governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party on Sunday paid tribute to 8 "Mothers of the Year" representing the eight (8) constituencies on St. Kitts.

National Political Leader, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, during the public session at the Grand Ball Room of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, in keeping with tradition, presented plaques and gifts to the mothers.

Sandy Point-born Esther Evans, who worked in the sugar industry before moving to East Basseterre, where she now resides, is a mother of two, grand mother of six and great grandmother of three.

Ms. Evans, who has also lived in Miami, remains a strong supporter of the Labour Party and is saluted by Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin, the Parliamentary Representative for East Basseterre and constituents as East Basseterre's "Mother of the Year."

Constituency # 3 "Mother of the Year" is Mrs. Doreen Delaney, a mother of 11 children, who loves to cook, sing and "loves her politics."

She is a member of the Antioch Baptist Church and a member of the "Women of Faith" group.

An employee of Harowe Servo Controls in Sandy Point, "where she steadfastly defends and promotes the philosphy of the Labour Government," Miss Thomas is Constituency # 4 "Mother of the Year."

Devastated by the sudden illness of her 18-year-old son, who suffered the bends as he had left school to assist her financially, Jennifer Annette Versailles did not grumble, lose hope or faith.

"She pledged to herself that none of her six other children will leave school to assist her financially. Some of her political enemies used to taunt her and her children because their uniforms were hand-me-downs," said the citation in the Labour Party Conference Booklet.

Today, Jennifer who has two sons studying overseas, is saluted as Constituency #4, "Mother of the Year" "for her Brimstone Hill Fortress-like determination and loyal support of the Labour Party despite her struggles."

A traffic warden and library assistant at the Newton Ground Primary School, Miss Diane Francis of Newton Ground, has been trained as a pre-school teacher at SERVOL in Trinidad and Tobago. She has a passion for politics and has been an advocate of the Labour Party "ever since she could pronounce the word Labour."

Miss Francis, Constituency Six "Mother of the Year" is an ardent Anglican Service Leader, who has served as President of District 6 of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Scout Leader and a consummate volunteer.

Constituency # 7's "Mother of the Year" is Mrs. Yvette Bass of Lodge Village, a mother of four, who has given her children "the best she has to offer and being a real source of strength, comfort and security for them."

As a supporter and stalwart of Labour, Miss Bass has served as house to house canvasser, caterer and indoor and outdoor agent.

"Mother of the Year" for Constituency # 8 is Nevisian Verona Griffin, who travelled to St. Kitts over 50 years ago. She is a mother of six and is actively involved in her church and presently serves as a member of the Mother's Union.

According to the Conference booklet, "Miss Griffin has been in the forefront of struggles and remembers the revered leader, Sir Robert Bradshaw admonishing parents to send their children to school to get a good education. Her advice to the young is to hold fast with labour."
