A tourism professional from the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, who swapped the sun and sea of the Caribbean to study in Sheffield, has become an award winning student.

Randolph Hamilton, who is studying for an MSc in International Tourism Management at Sheffield Hallam University, has been honoured with a prestigious award in recognition of excellence in his field of study. He was one of only 11 students who pocketed £100 of book tokens in the 13th Annual Sir Basil Blackwell Prize Giving Awards for outstanding achievement.

The senior manager at the St Kitts Tourism Authority, based in St Kitts, was thrilled with his success. He said: "I was overwhelmed, just really pleased. It is amazing to be acknowledged for all the hard work that you do."

Originally from the beautiful Caribbean island of St Kitts and Nevis, Randolph grew up in Leeds from the age of six, where he lived until graduating in tourism from Leeds Metropolitan University. He then headed back to St Kitts to work for the tourism authority. But a desire to expand his skills and knowledge led him back to Yorkshire. ~~Adz:Left~~

"I anticipate that their will be many changes in the Caribbean tourism industry in the next few years," he observed. "I wanted to be able to embrace those changes and contribute in whatever way that I can."

Looking around for a world-class tourism programme, Randolph was pointed in the direction of Sheffield Hallam University by a former tutor.

"Coming to Sheffield has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. It has been a wonderful experience. The course is fantastic and the lecturers are amazing. They really care about the experience of the students and that you get everything you can from the course."

Far from being a culture shock, Randolph compares Sheffield favourably with St Kitts and Nevis: "Sheffield is wonderful and it completely captivates you. It is a place to rival any others. I love this city."

Randolph will be returning to St Kitts and Nevis later this year after completing his MSc. But one thing is for certain - he is really going to miss Sheffield.
