    Makini Byron
Among the over 1200 students who graduated from Columbia University, New York, on Wednesday, May 16, 2007, was Makini Adama Byron.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering and a Minor in Environmental Engineering.  This special and proud moment in Makini's life was shared with her family and friends.

As a student, Makini was deeply involved in many activities and made significant contributions to the Columbia University community.

In recognition of her unselfish commitment to the Columbia community, she was a recipient of the Campus Life Leadership Award for the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science.  In addition, she was a recipient of the King's Crown Leadership Award; this was in acknowledgement for her exemplary commitment to building campus community through outstanding leadership with a recognized student organization.

She was an active and vibrant member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) of which she held many
positions, including being the President of this auspicious body during her senior year.   In 2004, because of her outstanding academic record she was nominated and received the prestigious award of being a Ronald E. McNair Fellow of Columbia University, an honor she upholds with pride to this day.

With a scholarship from the National GEM Consortium in collaboration with BP America and a Presidential Fellowship from Princeton University, Makini will be pursuing graduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Princeton University.

Makini is from the village of St. Paul's and is the daughter of Cordette Henry, former Principal of the Sandy Point High School, and Lawyer Terence Byron; and the granddaughter of Mr. John Henry and Mrs. Mavis Henry of St. Paul's.

She attributes her success to her faith in the Almighty God, the love and support of her parents, family and friends, her teachers from the Sandy Point Preschool, St. Theresa's Convent School, Washington Archibald High School (then Basseterre Junior High School), Basseterre High School and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College and members of the St. Paul's Anglican Church.   To all Makini says a big thank you.  ~~Adz:Right~~
