BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN a game expected to be brimming with goals, the match between S.L. Horsford St. Pauls and Rams Village Superstars on Sunday night (June 5), ended in a disappointing draw.
Warner Park Stadium was filled to capacity with chattering fans and beating drums providing a cacophonous atmosphere as the teams prepared themselves for battle.
Despite speculations of a goal filled match, St. Pauls and Village Superstars failed to hit the target on a number of occasions, thereby making the game appear stagnant.
St. Pauls’ Terrance Ward, however, struck in the 34th minute, after being isolated on the left side of the eighteen yard box, and after receiving a well-sighted pass from the right flank.
As the first half came to an end, this one goal seemed to be the only exciting action recorded.
At the half time break, Digicel did a promotion giving away cash and phone prizes. Phone numbers were called out and if you had such a number, you were given two chances to score a goal from the half line.
Winners of this promotion were Junior Freeman and Calvert Bennet, each winning a check of $200.
The second half resumed with Village Superstars looking energetic and attacking St. Pauls’ defense and repeatedly testing the goalkeeper.
At the 58th minute mark, St. Pauls’ defense succumbed to Village Superstars’ consistent attack, as Allister Warner fired his shot home from ten yards out.
As Village Superstars continued pressing and looking for a winner, the ball kept eluding the back of the nets, flying whiskers wide on several occasions.
Disappointment was set on the faces of both fans, as the referee blew the game to an end, leaving the score-line at 1-1.
