Ninety one students complete Handball coaching session

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, June 8th 2011 - On 2nd June 2011 at approximately 1:00pm the coaches of the St. Kitts Nevis Handball Association conducted a coaching session at the Beach Allen Primary School.

     

    This event saw some ninety one (91) students (52 males and 39 females) ages 10 to 11 taking part in the session which afforded them the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the sport along with skills, rules & regulations.

     

    In speaking with some of the children, they expressed excitement and joy of having the opportunity to learn this new sport.

     

    “This just like football but you got to play wid you hands instead of foot” expressed one child.

     

    Head Teacher Mrs. Emelita Warner-Paul expressed that she had been eagerly anticipating the start of this new programme and is excited that it has begun. “The children looked very happy and this gives me a great deal of satisfaction” said Warner-Paul.

     

    Mr. Leroy Greene of the SKNOC explained that he was charged with the duties of introducing and developing new sports and handball has never been played in the federation. Handball is an Olympic sport that can provide ample opportunities for our youth to express their physical prowess and also to develop in a holistic manner..

     

    ‘We endeavour to positively engage the youth of this nation and to encourage healthy lifestyles’ he added .

     

    Coaches Jeffery Hazel and Kenneth Douglas were both trained in Barbados in 2010 and conducted the sessions.

     

    The SKNHBA is in the process of making Handball a part of the sporting scene in St.Kitts and Nevis. 

     

    Sports Master of the School Mr. Morton was presented with  a practice ball  by Coach Douglas on behalf of the SKNHBA.
