ICC President Percy Sonn (center) enjoying cricket at Warner Park, St. Kitts
Basseterre, St. Kitts (May 30, 2007):
Minister of State with responsibility for Sport Hon. Richard Skerritt has expressed regret with the recent passing of the late International Cricket Council (ICC) President Percy Sonn.

Sonn died on May 27, after suffering complications following an operation on his colon. He was 57 years old.

Minister Skerritt, in extending sympathy on behalf of the government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, praised Sonn for numerous contributions in advancing cricket around the world, drawing specific reference to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.

He fondly recalled the encounter he had with the late ICC President during the Federation's hosting of first round matches for the premiere cricket event describing the interaction as a "memorable experience."

Sonn and his wife visited St. Kitts from March 15 to 18, during which time a VIP reception was hosted in his honour. He also attended the match between South Africa and the Netherlands at Warner Park in Basseterre, where he was treated to Herschelle Gibbs' impressive display of power when he hit six sixes in one over establishing a new World Cup record in the process.

Sonn, a native of South Africa, fell in love with St. Kitts after he was taken on an island tour by Minister Skerritt. He was so enchanted with the island, like many visitors are, that he expressed a desire to return while enquiring about real estate options. ~~Adz:Right~~

"He will be missed," Minister Skerritt told SKNIS. "President Sonn was extremely supportive of the region's hosting of the Cricket World Cup and shared the pride of all West Indian people when the games began last March."

"He was an excellent administrator and a genuine fan of the game. It is a great loss for cricket and the world," he added.

Minister Skerritt expresses condolences to Sonns wife Sandra and their two children.

Sonn became President of the ICC in 2006.
