BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DARYL GRANT, a student of the Washington Archibald High School, Form 3A1, is the winner of the Essence of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation T-Shirt Design competition.  For this competition students were challenged to design  a T-shirt for the Foundation’s October 2011 walk.

The competition was held under the theme “Raising Your Level of Expectancy and Creativity” and Daryl Grant emerged the winner.

He was followed by another fellow student of the school, Jalen Browne also of 3A1, and Lenroy Smith of the Cayon High School, placed third.

The winning design will be used on a T-shirt for the second annual “Walk for the cause-Race for life” walk-a-thon that is scheduled to be held on October 29, 2011.

The competition began in January and the winners were chosen in April from six participating High Schools in the Federation.

At a brief handing over ceremony during the school’s morning assembly, Essence of Hope, Founder Pamela Armstrong handed over the prize money to the winners.

She said originally they planned to award one student but felt that the other two designs were great and needed to be recognized.

Winning student, Grant, revealed that he loves drawing hence when his Art teacher informed them of the competition, he was eager to take on the challenge.

He explained that the concept for his design incorporated the Breast Cancer symbol or pink ribbon.

“This well known concept is then put in conjunction with the theme of this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Walk which states: "Walk for the cause, race for life". These are portrayed in the drawing to show that while there are those who choose to walk for the cause, there are others that courageously press forward and race for life,” he stated.

The second place winner said that he was delighted to be a part of the competition, and would like to see more research done for a cure.

Browne said that his design included the Breast Cancer ribbon and two hands -  one representing an African and the other a Caucasian hand.

Each hand also presented a man and woman and depicts unity; it also aims to show that breast cancer can affect anyone.

The founder of Essence of Hope said that the committee wanted to get the children involved and made aware of Breast Cancer and decided to come up with the competition.

She said that this October, their second annual week of activities will feature for the first time a Pink and White Gala/Fundraiser event at the Marriott Hotel.

The activities will then climax with the walk-a-thon which will begin at Camps this year instead of Greenlands.

“We are walking for friends, relatives, those we love and loved, we want to show our support and all funds raised are going to be providing breast screening mammograms for those who cannot afford to get one,” she said.
