Chamber of Industry and Commerce
    Mr Pilgrim, Guest speaker at the St. Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce's (CIC) upcoming Quarterly Luncheon Meeting and Seminar on Tuesday, June 5 at the Ocean Terrance Inn
    The benefits of a Performance-Based Incentive Plan on organisational performance will be the main topic at the St. Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce's (CIC) upcoming Quarterly Luncheon Meeting and Seminar on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Ocean Terrace Inn, starting at 12 noon.

    Executive Director of the CIC, Wendy Phipps, announced that the keynote address at the luncheon seminar will be delivered by Mr John Pilgrim of Barbados:

    "Mr Pilgrim, who is the Executive Director of the Barbados National Productivity Council, will be sharing with the Chamber's membership and other invited guests the major findings of a recent productivity study done in Barbados," Ms Phipps said.
    Ms Phipps indicated that Mr Pilgrim's study was based on human resource and production data collected in Barbados during the 10-year period of 1994-2004.  Among other matters, she said that the study produced the following findings among Barbadian workers and organisations:-
                                                                                                      ~~Adz:Right~~

    1.  The organisation increases pay only when it can afford to;
    2.  The performance-based incentive plan increases employment security;
    3.  The plan also heightens work force motivation leading to greater efficiencies and effectiveness; and
    4.  The performance-based incentive plan supports a team-oriented and high-involvement culture in the work place.

    It is expected that Mr Pilgrim will discuss with the Chamber's luncheon audience in greater detail, the reasons for the above findings.  Given the similarities of the Barbadian workforce to our own St. Kitts-Nevis labour market, it is quite possible that  well structured, performance-based incentive plans would yield similar results here, Ms Phipps added.

    In outlining Mr Pilgrim's career history Ms Phipps stated that he has been involved in the design and development of Productivity Improvement Programmes in the wider Caribbean, including St. Kitts and Nevis, the Bahamas, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, and the Netherlands Antilles.  Mr Pilgrim is also a prolific writer on productivity issues.  Among his writings are the following papers:-
    • The Feasibility of Developing a Productivity Index for the Public Sector
    • Developing a Productivity and Performance-Based Measurement System for the Public Sector: A Payment Perspective for Workers
    •      A Framework for a Public Sector Performance-Based Bonus

    Mr Pilgrim is also a regular contributor to both "Productivity in Focus", a publication of the Barbados National Productivity Council, and The Barbados Advocate newspaper.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of the West Indies and a Master of Arts in Agricultural Economics from Leeds University in the United Kingdom.  In addition, he is also a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science.
