BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A popular Mathematics teacher and law student, Newrish Nital had his first trial day today (June 9) at the Basseterre High Court, where it is alleged that he obtained money by fraudulent means.

According to the prosecution team led by Crown Counsel Garth Wilkin, on April 1, 2 and 4, 2008, Nital did present several United States Postal Service International Postal Money Orders to a cashier at the Post Office with intent to defraud.

The prosecution also alleges that he obtained EC$3 710, EC$1 855 and EC$3 710 on April 1, 2 and 4,  respectively, from the cashier by falsely pretending that certain documents were the United States Postal Service International Postal Money Orders.

Nital was said to have had a total of five US$700 money orders and took them to the postal office on the dates in question.

The prosecution is expected to call four witnesses including the cashier, who was the first to give evidence in the matter this morning.

Nital is being represented by Attorney-at-Law Anthony Johnson.

The Mathematics teacher, who resided at Greenlands at the time, was formally arrested and charged on Friday, August 29, 2008 after the postal orders were discovered to be fraudulent.

In an unrelated case, Carl Warner was found guilty by a 12-member jury for indecently assaulting of a 23-year-old woman at his home in Lodge on August 28, 2010.

He was represented by Attorney John Cato and was yesterday found guilty of touching the woman’s breast and vagina while she was seated in his home.

He is expected to be sentenced on June 23.
