Green Valley hosts Official Opening and Awards Ceremony

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Green Valley Festival was declared officially opened last night (June. 9) at the Cayon Community Centre, where an awards ceremony also took place. 

     

    The night’s proceedings opened with welcoming remarks by Vaple Burt, the Ceremony Chairperson, followed by a melodious rendition by Nicola Thompson. 

     

    Festival Chairman, Vernon Benjamin delivered opening remarks and declared the festival officially opened. 

     

    Benjamin noted that it has been an honour serving as Festival chairman but said he would be stepping down to make room for the young people.

     

    Area representative, Eugene Hamilton, was also present and congratulated the committee on their 15 years of success, hard work and dedication.

     

    He encouraged them to focus on their mission and nothing else, while adding that they should continue to shine bright and pay no attention to the negatives they would often hear coming from some people.

     

    The event also saw a mini fashion show where cultural wear and formal dresses made by Faith Benjamin of Cayon, adorned the bodies of the proud models strutting the walk way.

     

    Meanwhile, 15 awards were given to noteworthy individuals and groups for their significant achievements and outstanding service to their community.   

     

    The awardees were: Pastor Benjamin Browne for – Community Achievement; Tyrone O’ Louglin – Community Organisation; Kervin Benjamin – Youth Achievement; Chesil Hamilton – Arts/Entertainment/Media;  Andy Blanchette – Beyond Sport Community;  Jacquelyn Bassue – Teacher of The Year;  Cayon High School Steel Band – Community Spirit; Winston Caesar – Environment;  Allister Edwards – Role Model;  Sharon Benjamin – Major Achievement;  Green Valley Global – Major Achievement; Florence Baker – Senior Citizen Award; Vernon Benjamin – Excellence In Community Service; Valentine Grant – Community Partnership, and Solomon Morton for Excellence in Agriculture.  

     

    Before the ceremony ended, the Miss Green Mist contestants introduced themselves after which Shana Herbert gave the vote of thanks.
       
    The Green Valley Festival will continue tonight when the contestants will compete in three segments for the 2011 title. The show will also see competitors for the Junior Calypso Show strive to capture the 2011 Junior Calypso Crown.
