Singing Angie retains Green Valley Calypso crown

Junior and Senior Green Valley Calypso Monarchs - Mighty Midget and Singing Angie

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SINGING ANGIE has once again proven to be the unstoppable force at the Green Valley Senior Calypso Competition, as she was adjudged winner last night (June 11) for the third consecutive year from a field of 11 competitors.

Performing at Maynard’s Park, Singing Angie retained her crown with a rendition titled 'One Song', which highlighted many issues that the society currently faces.

In her rendition, Singing Angie stated that she has to try and fit everything into one song because, unlike previous years when competitors had to sing two songs, the Green Valley Committee had changed the rules to one.

Brabread captured the First Runner-up position singing ‘You Got To Go’, which gave details about his mishap last year and why he was thrown out of the competition.

The Second Runner-up was Godfrey who sang ‘Who In Control’. Some patrons opined that he had a great song but he was off key on several occasions.

Jungle Lion was adjudged Third Runner up with ‘Too Much Gunshot’; a song that spoke to the current situation in the Federation.

The other participants were De Priest with ‘No Bawl’, Copper Head who sang ‘Too Much To Sing in One Song’, Tallal with a rendition called ‘Green Valley Jam’, Sha Angel with ‘An Example Set’,  Babu with ‘High Grade’, Fooster speaking to ‘My Village Heroes’, and Watch You Back with a song called ‘Quite A Now’.

Babu, who was the only calypsonian to induce some laughter and excitement among the crowd, was recalled onstage and given EC$100 for his entertaining performance. The donation was made by Pele Gumbs, a businessman from Cayon.

SKNVibes spoke with Queen Angie, who, in an almost inaudible voice due to hoarseness, said she felt “happy, happy, happy”. She also smilingly declared that she has thoughts of sitting out next year’s competition to “give the fellows a break”.

In a previous interview with Queen Angie, she said that her fans could definitely expect a ‘three-peat’. She added that it was something she dreamt about achieving and it would mean a lot to her should it become a reality.

The Junior Calypso Competition which was scheduled for the night before was also held last night.

In his explanation for the postponement, organiser Mark O’Loughlin said he did not feel the young calypsonians were ready, as some of them had received their songs very late.

However, Mighty Midget, the youngest of the eight competitors, dethroned King Scribbles with a song entitled ‘Morals Gone’.

King Scribbles was adjudged Second Runner-up singing ‘Gangsta’, while Mighty Ricky took the First Runner-up position with ‘Nation Under Threat’.

The Mighty Midget, whose name is Shamar Pemberton, told SKNVibes that he felt great winning because it was his first time in the calypso arena.

The 10-year-old used the opportunity to thank all those who assisted him in coming out on top, especially Enrick Daniel who composed his song.

The show saw the appearance of National Senior Monarch Pungwa as well as veteran calypsonian Phonsy who rendered a number of his old songs.

The event, which was hosted by Damian ‘Cuttoe’ Liburd and co-hosted by Altonia Springer and 2010 Queen Ivanka James, ended shortly after 1:00 a.m.

The Green Valley Festival continues tonight with the Reggae and Soca Band-O-Rama Explosion.
