Darnell Govia on his way to prison.
    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
Darnell Govia, 21, of Phillips' who was charged with attempted murder was convicted of the crime on Friday, June, 8 and was sentenced yesterday Monday, June, 11 to 10 years.

The jury deliberated for about three hours before handing in their verdict at the Basseterre High Court.

Moments before His Lordship Francis Belle sentenced Govia, his mother Arlene Govia spoke on his behalf and begged His Lordship to have mercy on her son.

"This is the first time he ever get himself in anything since I bring him into this world," she said crying.  "Nobody ever made any reports on him; my Lord I ask that you have mercy upon him."

"Do you have anything to say to the victim or his family?" asked His Lordship.

"Whatever happened I am really really sorry," his mother responded.

His Lordship Belle responded and said, "How do you think they feel?"  He is no longer a man in his sight, he can't do anything for himself& this is what three shots did to him.~~Adz:Right~~

Belle continued and said that the attack Govia made on the victim was brutal and shocking.

"This was a brutal shocking attack on an unarmed victim; I see you as a dangerous criminal," he said.  "And I don't know what else to do but to send you to prison for as long as I can and that is ten years."

Govia sat in the prisoners' dock quietly and showed no emotions while being sentenced or did not say anything on his behalf which was his right.

According to the prosecution, Govia attacked and tried to murder Mark Robertson a native of Guyana who was residing in the Federation at the time.  The incident occurred in December 2005.

Robertson was shot three times and as a result of one of the bullets hitting his spinal cord he was left paralyzed.
