Principal of the Gingerland Primary School, Mrs. Marion Lescott on Wednesday 30, appealed to parents in the Gingerland community to show more interest in their children. The Principal made the call while delivering the school report for the academic year 2003-2004 at the 17th annual graduation and prize giving ceremony, held at the St. Georges’ Anglican Church.

She said, “We appeal to parents to show more interest and help to motivate their children by providing incentives for good performance at school.”  She pointed out that teachers’ success at school depended heavily on the support of home and the community.  “We would like to bring out the best in our children and equip them to overcome the challenges of this age,” Lescott commented.

While attributing that to the growing concern of the student’s attitude, Principal Lescott said, “One of our greatest concerns is the indifferent attitude of some students to school and work in general.  Some students behave as if what they are learning is solely for the benefit of the teachers.  They seem to lack the sense of purpose which should inspire them to get a good education in order to ensure a good future for themselves.”

The ceremony which was graced with the presence of Junior Minister of Education, the Hon Livingston Herbert, Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Oban Lawrence, and education officials, saw forty-one students graduated to the secondary level.  Trevorne Nisbett and Laurencia Powell were the top students for the test of standards 2004, not only at their school but the island of Nevis.  It was noted that Laurencia fell just one point below Trevorne’s average.

Trevorne, who presented the valedictory speech, expressed sincere gratitude on his own behalf as well as the graduating class of 2004, to all who contributed to their success thus far.  He said, “To all our educators, we would like to say thanks for your hard work and dedication.  It was an exciting and adventurous time for us.”

“You often displayed the spirit of praise when we were at our best,” he added.  “You encouraged when we were about to quit, assured when we were afraid, nursed when we were sick, tolerated when we were at our worse, and of course disciplined when there was a need.”

“Let us remind ourselves that we can each achieve our goals if we stay focused,” he told the graduants.  “Please let us not lean towards the evil forces that now threaten our community.  Let us be good role models and make wise choices. Let not the hard work of our primary education go for naught.  We can make it if we try, provided that we trust God to be our guide; remember we can do all things through Christ who strengthened us.”

As he concluded his presentation, Trevorne left these words with his fellow students.  “To those of who we are leaving behind, remember that success comes with hard work and determination.  Never allow any one or any thing to stand in your way or try to take your dreams away from you.  Gingerland primary can be the best school on the island if you do your part. We trust you to cooperate with the teachers and commit yourselves to aspire for the highest at all times.”

As he departed the podium, Trevorne reiterated the theme “We promise everyone that we will strive to achieve success through a wining attitude.  We will conceive, we will believe and we will certainly achieve.”  The graduation was held under the distinguished patronage of Mr. & Mrs. Oriel Hanley.

Mrs. Averil Elliott, Language Arts Co-ordinator of the Education Department, gave the feature address while Rev Tyrone Hunkins also gave brief remarks.  Mr. Stedroy Williams chaired the ceremony.
