One-way traffic violator causes accident at Buckley’s Estate

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN elderly man today (June 16) escaped serious injuries when he unknowingly rode down a one-way street and was struck down by a pickup.

The accident, which occurred at about 12:55 p.m. at the junction of the Island’s Main Road and the main thoroughfare leading into Buckley’s Estate, involved Oscar Vasquez who was riding a yellow and black Moppet Scooter (PA 7819) and Kevin Gerald who was driving a white Toyota pickup (P3156) owned by Geoinfomatics and Positioning Services.

When this media house arrived at the scene, the scooter and the vehicle were in the middle of the Island’s Main Road and the two men were assisting a female police officer with her investigation.

Vasquez, who only suffered minor bruises to his hand, told SKNVibes he did not know that the road leading into Buckley’s Estate was a one-way thoroughfare and he had ridden his scooter out of it.

The elderly man said he had stopped at the end of the road and as he rode off onto the Island’s Main Road, he was struck by the pickup.

Gerald said that he was driving towards the Basseterre area from the western direction when his vehicle collided with Vasquez’s scooter.

The driver of the pickup said that he did not expect any vehicle or other motor-driven transportation to be exiting that direction and that he did not see Vasquez.

An eyewitness also confirmed that Vasquez rode down the one-way street before he was hit by the vehicle.
