(Basseterre; St. Kitts): Even though Everson “Blee” Mitcham has been spared from the gallows quite a few people on the street still feel strongly about the matter.

Mitcham and two others committed a robbery back in 2001, resulting in the death of Vernal Nisbett.  Mitcham was charged and found guilty of that murder and was sentenced to be hanged.  However, his legal team launched an appeal to the Privy Council in London, effectively staying his execution - which was scheduled for June 19.

SKNVibes.com took to the streets to hear the opinions of some of the general public on how they feel about Mitcham not being hung.

Here’s what they had to say:

Fitzroy White – “I think everybody deserves a second chance but he didn’t do something good.  I share sympathy with his family and they should pray he don’t get hang again, although I think it would have sent a message to the criminals. We need to get the government and politics out of this; the communities need to come together to find solutions to sort out things and if he gets a second chance he should give his heart to the Lord.  They also need to make hanging public and bring it in the square to show all these criminals and young persons committing crime it not something nice and they would pay the penalty and then hopefully some of them would turn their life around.”

Oliver Bourne – “I think he should have been hung!  And not just him but all the others they have in there to hang. I personally feel it will help to deter people from doing similar things and all other persons who are in prison for similar cases they should hang them in a short time.  It shouldn’t take so long - it will send a stronger message which is if you want to take a person’s life for no reason yours also will be taken.”

Levar Flanders – “I don’t feel he alone should be hung; I think the three of them should have gotten the same sentence. If three persons commit a crime then all three should pay the same penalty; it’s all about equality and fairness.”

Micaela Fahie – “ I believe he should have get hang cause he did the crime and was found guilty and there is too much crime in St. Kitts, if they don’t bring back hanging the crime won’t stop.”

James Frederick – “They are wasting time, de man done bury long time so they need to get de rid of that man. You mean to say there is no justice?  They killing people and coming back out on de road to do the same thing.”
