Basseterre, St. Kitts: Two children, ages 3 and 1, were burnt to death on Monday afternoon (today), July 9th, after the house which they were in was totally destroyed by fire.

The tragedy occurred in Downing Street, Sandy Point, in an alley just behind the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

According to reports reaching SKNVibes.com, the Fire and Rescue Services responded to a call sometime after two in the afternoon. The officers fought the blaze, which destroyed at least two tenements in the area but after putting the blaze under control they were able to confirm that two children were indeed in one of the buildings. Testimony to this fact was their charred remains inside the house.

Both children lived with their mother, 21 year old Shawna Pemberton, who reportedly had left them unattended to make a quick errand. It was during her absence that the fire occurred.

~~adz:left~~Upon hearing the news of the disaster, the mother became very emotionally distraught and had to be whisked away for medical attention.

The father of the children, Kelly Rogers, also visited the scene and broke down in tears as the loss of his children left him in a state of shock.

Speculations ran rife among eyewitnesses after the fire but the official Police and Fire and Rescue Services reports are still pending.

The tragedy has left residents shocked and tears were common, not only among relatives and friends but also among villagers, as they wrestled to come to grasp with the disaster.

SKNVibes was on the scene and follow up reports will be posted shortly.
