Fifty computers were donated to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis by the Government of Turkey, during a brief official handing over ceremony at the Basseterre High School, on Tuesday, July 10th.
The computers will be allocated to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union and the ICT Department.
The majority of the computers, thirty of them, will be handed over to the Ministry of Education, as that Ministry seeks to achieve its mandate of making computers accessible to every secondary and primary school student in the island.
Minister of Education, Hon. Sam Condor expressed his gratitude to the Turkish Government, through their Honorary 
Consul, Mr. Michael Morton, and added that he hoped that this was just the beginning of very fruitful relationship.
He noted that such assistance will go a long way in placing St. Kitts and Nevis on the cutting edge of technology.
Minister Condor, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, spoke of his Ministry’s aggressive drive to outfit all schools, secondary and primary, with computers and creating positive avenues to make more productive young people.
He noted that it was a challenging task, especially with the coming on stream of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) which makes things even more competitive, but was optimistic of overcoming that challenge.
He also conveyed gratitude to TDC for their logistical assistance and their help with the storage of the computers.

Among the other officials who took part in the handing over ceremony where the Honorary Consul to Turkey, Mr. Michael Morton, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ms. Theresa Nisbett, and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of education.
A number of other officials, representing the benefactors, were also present at the ceremony.
Turkey has the distinction of being one of the founding members of the United Nations and is presently seeking to further cement its relations with the small territories of the OECS. Testament to this fact is the branding of 2006, by Turkey, as Caribbean and Latin American Year.
The donation of the 50 computers stems from an initiative by the Turkish Government, where 250 computers were donated to the five Caribbean islands- Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Kitts and Nevis- to be divided. ~~Adz:Right~~
The initiative, which was disclosed by Ambassador of Turkey to St.Kitts-Nevis Sanivar Kizildeli, underscores the drive by Turkey to build on its relations with the smaller islands of the Caribbean.
