Fire destroys Ponds Pasture bedroom but firemen save building

The house that firemen saved from total destruction

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A William Street, Ponds Pasture home was saved from total destruction on Thursday night (June 24) when a volunteer at the Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) saw smoke billowing from the building and responded immediately.

     

    According to Fire Sub-Station Officer Everson Belle of the Basseterre Branch of the FRS, smoke was spotted coming from the home, which is located near the Police Training School, and the FRS arrived at the scene at about 9:40 p.m.

     

    Belle said upon arrival, they met a single bedroom on the north-eastern section of the building on fire.

     

    He said that the unit went into action quickly and were able to extinguish the fire by using water from the fire appliance, supplemented with hydrant pressure.

     

    “The room and all its contents were completely destroyed and also the ceiling of the opposite room was partly burnt,” the sub-officer said.

     

    The building is owned by Lawson Liddie and the bedroom was occupied by Police Constable Austin Douglas.

     

    The fire is categorised as ‘Class A’ and the cause of it is unknown and under investigation.

     

    Belle said from the information they received no one was at home at the time of the fire.
