Opposition Party Leader outraged as St.Kitts-Nevis records 15th and 16th Murder in weekend shootings

St.Kitts-Nevis Opposition People’s Action Movement Leader Lindsay Grant
Press Release

BASSETERRE St.Kitts, June 28th 2011 - St.Kitts-Nevis main opposition People’s Action Movement Leader Mr. Lindsay Grant has expressed outrage as the federation grapples with an unrelenting crime wave. During an interview on a local radio station Grant said he was absolutely fed-up with the ever increasing and seemingly unrelenting crime wave that has been experienced by the country over the last 5-6 years.

The Opposition Party Leader made his comments in light of a weekend spate of shootings which  resulted in the deaths of two young men and the serious injury to 3 others including one young female.

Grant made a passionate and heartfelt plea to the government to solicit outside help including the engagement of an experienced management team to efficiently direct the security forces in an effort to once and for all put a halt to the ever spiralling crime situation.

“Some may not like it, but at this present time it is not a matter of who likes what, it is a matter of solving the serious problem faced by this country,” opined Grant.  “Let us bring in a management team in the police force and clean up the system,” Grant lamented.

“Murderers are walking within our midst and we can’t even solve the murders in the country. Thirteen percent rate of solving crime in this country and we are walking around enjoying ourselves. Well I am absolutely fed up!!!!!!! I live in this country, am a part of this country, I care about this country. And unless somebody stands up and say enough is enough, nothing is going to be done,” said Grant.

“My Party has done its role…continues to play its role. Civil society in this country is playing a role and continues to play a role. It was just two weeks ago when they (NGO’s) made a statement and what did the Prime Minister say…’they stepping outside their bounds’……….Stepping outside their bounds when they are making critical analysis and suggestions for the government to solve the problem,” stated the PAM Leader.

Less than one month ago a group of NGO’s Led by the the Chamber of Industry & Commerce recommended that government take immediate steps to recruit a team of specially qualified security officers from overseas to take temporary leadership of the police force. The NGO’s also recommended the appointment of a new Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security.

The People’s Action Movement led by Grant have made several proposals and recommendations to the government,  all of which have been rebuffed ,  regarding the crime crisis which the country is experiencing. The party has presented a 16 point crime fighting plan and is currently putting the final touches on an updated crime fighting initiative that will be presented to the country on a whole including the NGO’s, government and citizens.

The weekend murders brings the total amount of murders in the federation of St.Kitts-Nevis to 16 for the year 2011.
