BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 29th, 2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Mrs. Patricia Martin, was among Western Hemispheric officials concluding a round of negotiations on the ‘Draft Declaration of San Salvador to Sustainable Tourism Development’, the working document of the 19th Inter-American Travel Congress slated for El Salvador in September.
Mrs. Martin was joined at the talks by Mr. Abdullah Skerritt of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority’s Washington, DC office.
on June 23 and 24, 2011, and was aimed at elaborating the ‘Draft Declaration of San Salvador to Sustainable Tourism Development’, the working document of the 19th Inter-American Travel Congress slated for El Salvador in September.
The participation of the Federal representatives for the preparatory meeting at the OAS Headquarters in the US capital was coordinated through the St. Kitts & Nevis Permanent Mission to the OAS in Washington DC.
According to Permanent Secretary Martin, “the Inter-American Travel Congress is a high-level meeting of hemispheric importance, as it addresses the concerns of an industry that constitutes the driving force of the vast majority of economies in the Caribbean, in particular, in and The Americas at large.”
The Permanent Secretary further explained that it is for this reason that St. Kitts & Nevis could not afford to forego the opportunity to ensure inclusion of our specific interests in the document to be discussed at the summit.
“We must make sure that our interests, positions and specific concerns are adequately and effectively articulated at the highest levels in this and all hemispheric organizations” Ms. Martin emphasized.
In commenting on the outcome of the meeting, Mr. Skerritt opined that “the Draft Declaration that was hammered out is a strong document that would provide a sturdy framework on which to work at the Inter-American Travel Congress in El Salvador.”
