"Honouring Our Ancestors through Our Art" is the theme of the exhibit being jointly presented by The St. Kitts and Nevis National Commission for UNESCO and the St. Christopher Heritage Society.

The Exhibition, which is to be housed at the National Museum for three months, seeks to show, according to that committee’s Chair, Ms. Hazel Brookes, how art today is strongly influenced by Africans, transported to these islands as part of the Slave Trade.

“Local, regional and African art and craft will be featured,” Ms. Brookes says,  “in addition to drumming, pottery and hair braiding demonstrations.” An evening of Warri, an African board game, is also planned.   ~~Adz:Right~~

Ms. Brookes has extended an invitation to the entire local community to gather at the Archway of the National Museum, beginning July 24th, to view the art and craft and encourages patrons to ask questions and to make the experience more than the appreciation of good art.

“This event is part of a wider project,” she says, “which years from now should have changed they way we view our history, our people and ourselves.”

The Art and Craft Exhibit forms part of the Commemorative activities planned to memorialise the abolition of the slave trade 200 years ago. The project was approved through the UNESCO participation Programme, and was officially launched in February of this year.
