Press Secretary

    Hon. Joseph Parry

(Charlestown, Nevis- Monday, July 23, 2007) “One of the main concerns of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led government has been the crime rate on Nevis.  We are alarmed that in spite of virtually full employment, we still have break-ins of private homes on the island from time to time,” said Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry in his anniversary address to the nation.

Premier Parry has worked closely with Superintendent of the Nevis Devision of the Royal St. Christopher & Nevis Police Force, Mr. Joseph Liburd on issues of crime since the change of Government in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA).  He has taken measures to ensure the comfort of the member of the Police Force here in Nevis. “We have completed the Gingerland Police Station and are seeking to do work in Newcastle and Cotton Ground as well. This is an attempt to improve housing conditions for the police.”

The Nevis Island Cabinet has approved the purchase of a vehicle for the police dog which will improve the work of the police in detection. The Nevis Island Cabinet is also assisting in the provisions of bullet proof vests and a metal detector. The police will have the full cooperation of the NRP led NIA as they seek to tackle the crime situation on Nevis.    ~~Adz:Right~~

Statistical figures submitted by the police, suggests that between January and June of 2006, 117 incidents of crime were reported to the police, Fifty-eight of these reports have been solved by the police.  For the same period this year, there were 116 incidents of crime basically, no difference. Sixty-three of these have been solved by the police, a marginal improvement over last year, a record improvement worth mentioning.  However, we need to discourage gangs, drug use and trafficking because most of the activities in the violent use of drugs are restricted to these areas of crime.

Mr. Parry went on to say, “I have agreed with the police that there is a regular need to monitor movements between the islands of the Federation in regard to the criminal activity. We do need the full support of the St.Kitts Division of the Police Force in the matter and I am sure, we will witness a major decline in violent crimes on the island of Nevis.”
