(Charlestown, Nevis) --- The Culturama Last Lap session will have to end by 10 p.m. this year said Superintendant of the Charlestown Police Corps, Mr. Joseph Liburd.
The remarks came during a brief interview with SKNVibes.com concerning strategies to be implemented during this year’s Culturama festival to enhance safety. While Mr. Liburd said that he does not anticipate an influx of crime during the festival he is not in agreement with the late extension of the Last Lap session.
“We find that it is too risky especially in times like these when violence is the order of the day and people tend to use the opportunity to do whatever evil they want to do. It is advisable and it is our decision to not extend the jamming session too late into the night. The cut off point will be anywhere between 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.,” he said.
However, Liburd says that the start up time is in the hands of the Culturama committee and he expects to see an early start and an early finish.
He continued, “If they want to start at 12 o’ clock in the afternoon that is completely up to them but it is just that we do not like the jamming to end late. We have put strategies into place in order to eliminate crime and violent behavior which may be likely to be a part of the activities but we believe that this year will be as peaceful as possible.”
As per custom Mr. Liburd explained that a compliment of police officers will be present at all the Culturama activities to ensure the safety of the general public.    ~~Adz:Right~~
“We want to advise persons in the general public to be safe and careful. Do not drink and drive. It is a festive season and people will drink but we expect that common sense will prevail and if you are driving at night or day you will have a designated driver.
“The designated driver must not engage in any alcoholic beverages and they can save not only their own lives but also other lives by being moderate in all that they do. Business place owners should not leave float money unattended overnight. All monies should be taken to the bank after the end of the day. If people steal only money from you it is almost impossible for the police to trace,” he said.
In ending the interview Liburd urged all road users to follow the direction of police officers during and the Culturama season and noted that parking would be available at the Charlestown Villa. He discouraged people from congesting the streets explaining that emergency vehicles need sufficient room in event of a disaster.
