BRADES, Montserrat, July 5th, 2011 - Five persons from various government agencies are currently in Grenada participating in a five day telecommunications training course.

They are Constable Kirk Brade of the Royal Montserrat Police Force, Wendell Daley and Carlisle Williams of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, Derrick Dwight Wright of the Fire Service and Laura Malone of the Disaster Management Coordination Agency.

On return, the team will take the lead in the installation and maintenance of their departments’ systems. They will also be able to lead a local team to work on all agency emergency communication systems for Montserrat.

Additionally, the trained individuals will be part of the emergency response team for the communication arm of the Disaster Management Coordination Agency, DMCA.

Some areas that will be covered include principles of radio communication, antenna installation, programming Motorola phones, and techniques in attaching connecters to coaxial cables.

The course is funded by the United Nations Development Program UNDP under the Regional Risk Reduction Initiative R31.

The R31 initiative seeks to strengthen disaster management capabilities in the English and Dutch Overseas Territories by supplying the requisite technology and ensuring sustainability through investment in human capacity building.

The course will end on July 8th.
