Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, July 5th, 2011 - The Ministry of Communications and Works is currently in the process of implementing the changes stipulated in the new legislation. – Cabinet has approved the Amendment to the Vehicles and Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Regulations, 2011, which outlines changes in specifications and standards for traffic signs, pavement markings and colours.

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations Minister of Communications and Works Honourable Julian Fraser, RA said, “The ministry gave careful consideration in reaching its decision to amend road signs and markings that were in some cases many decades old and no longer in circulation.”

Hon. Fraser also said that the ministry will soon launch an educational campaign to include a television programme which will demonstrate to the public exactly how the new signs and markings are to be interpreted and used. The airing dates and times of the programme will soon be announced.

Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works Mrs. Myrna Ferdinand said, “The new signs and markings are positive changes that mainstream the look of the Territory’s roads and the flow of traffic,” adding, “It is hopeful that motorists will be pleased with the ministry’s efforts and appreciate the ease in interpreting the new signs and markings for safer roadways.”

The new amendment repeals and replaces Schedules I, II and III of the Vehicle and Road Traffic Regulations, 1973. Schedule I now depicts Warning Signs, Schedule II depicts Regulatory Signs and Schedule III depicts Pavement Markings.

Cabinet’s approval of the new traffic signs and pavement markings further demonstrates Government’s vision to improve and modernise the Territory’s traffic system and highlights the Ministry of Communications and Works’ commitment to road safety.
