BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN a more than unfortunate turn of events, an elderly woman, said to be in her 80s, was today (July 8) injured during a shooting incident that took place just yards from her Central Market Street home.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:09 a.m., little more than two hours after a young man was shot in The Village and later died at the JNF General Hospital.

According to neighbours, Coldota Hendrickson was making her usual visit to employees at PJ’s Trading Laundromat when gunfire was heard in that area.

This publication was informed that Hendrickson was on the establishment’s staircase when gunmen opened fire upon a group of men who were standing near the entrance of a track that leads to College Street Ghaut.

Reports indicate that the gunmen came from the direction of Dorset Village.

The reports also indicate that when members of the group realised they were fired upon, they ran in various directions. However, one of the intended victims ran in the direction of Shear Lane and was apprehended by the police.

This media house learnt that he is currently assisting police with their investigations into the matter.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that in excess of 12 bullets were fired and Hendrickson was injured in both legs.

It was also said that Hendrickson had cried out for help, asking for pieces of cloth to stem the flow of blood from her injured legs.

The injured octogenarian was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital in a privately-owned vehicle, where she was treated for her injuries and is said to be in stable condition.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Department and other members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force responded to reports of the incident and conducted preliminary investigations.

Just hours before, Wendell ‘Dog’ Wilkinson of Cardin Avenue died following a shooting incident in Union Street; and less than 11 hours prior to that incident, Ricardo ‘Fila’ Pemberton of Old Road was shot in his home village and died as a result.
