~~Adz:Right~~ (Basseterre; St. Kitts): Melvin James, an Agronomist at Cardi will represent St. Kitts at a in Grenada which began on Monday, August, 27. The workshop which is expected to last for a week is on plant quarantine for the review of draft international standards for phyto-sanitary measures.

There will also be delegates from nine other countries including Nevis, St. Lucia, Belize and Haiti.

According to a press release, Dr. Gene Pollard who is the Food and Agriculture Organization plant protection officer wants regional countries to make it mandatory for quarantine officers to inspect imported used vehicles.

“Since they come from different terrains and can come in contact with soil that may have infectious pests…” the press release said.

Pollard also said that the workshop is very timely to the region.

”In a parallel situation, you can see now what is happening with China, and the recall of toys because of standards not being acceptable to the U.S. in a similar fashion, if your agricultural produce does not reach up to a certain standard, then your trade can be affected.”
