CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – A family’s day of fun at the Oualie Beach Resort in Nevis yesterday (July 10) ended in tragedy as a seven-year-old lad was pronounced dead at the Alexandria Hospital after being rescued from a watery grave in the Caribbean Sea.

The dead lad, Keyon Welcome of Douglas Estate in St. Kitts, would have celebrated his eighth birthday on Thursday (July 14).

According to reports, Welcome went to the Beach Resort with his mother, Karen Welcome, and other family members to enjoy a day of outing.

It is said that he left his mother on land and went into the water to swim but encountered some difficulty.

Unconfirmed reports stated that he was rescued by a notable basketball player who brought him to the shore, where artificial respiration was administered, while anxious relatives awaited the arrival of a unit from the Emergency Medical Services.

According to Inspector Andre Mitchell of the Nevis Division, the boy was rushed to the hospital but died on arrival.

Mitchell noted that a post mortem would be done shortly to determine the cause of death.
