The 2007 Summer Internship Program involving some 14 students from the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, comes to end on Friday 17 August. For the past 10 weeks, the students were attached to various departments of the university as follows: Diagnostic Services; Information Technology; Library; Human Resources; Anatomy; Front Office; Copy Center; Community Practice; Facilities; and Necropsy. The students were engaged in a number of projects, and thus were able to obtain valuable hands--on work experiences; Ross University on the other hand, benefited tremendously from the energies and enthusiasm of the young people. Hence the internship has been of mutual benefit.

~~Adz:Right~~ In addition to the technical skills which they were able to learn and develop, the students were also exposed to a social skills program which entailed the following topics: sexual harassment; a professional image; veterinary medicine as a career; assertiveness/initiative training; time management; and interview skills. The primary objective was to enhance the personal and professional development of the students, making them even more suitable for the world of work. The sessions were held on Friday mornings, and were presented by members of staff: Cyndie Demming; Gary Liburd; Dr. Anna Marie Miller (faculty); Virginia Browne; Keithly Hicks; Heather Hotchin; and Michael Chapman. The sessions were highly interactive, and the students found that the topics were very timely and extremely relevant.

On Tuesday 14 August, the students as well as the instructors on the social skills program, as well as a few other persons associated with the internship program, were hosted to a sumptuous luncheon by Ms. Stapleton, Campus Administrator. All of the students took the opportunity to express very kind appreciation to Ross University for the opportunity provided and the invaluable experience gained over the 10 weeks. Positive experiences were highlighted by the presenters, and best wishes for the future were extended to all the students. Ms Stapleton commended the students for a job well done, and thanked all who made the 2007 Summer Internship the huge success that it was touted to be by all. Already we look forward to the 2008 program.

As a token of Ross University’s appreciation to the students, each was presented with a specially designed tee shirt and a certificate. The Human Resources Department will like to thank Ms Denise Fyfield, Registrar for designing the tee shirt.

Ross University has been collaborating with the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College for about three years – through internships for college students, and the provision of equipment for the Information Technology department of the college. Some interns have also found employment as well. A smaller number of internships are also provided to students attending universities abroad. In the future, there will definitely be an expansion of the program.

Hence, Ross University has been making a sterling contribution to the development of education in St. Kitts through its outreach initiative (our way of giving back to the community), and Ross University benefits from the community through having a cadre of well trained individuals who can be selected as employees.
