Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sam Condor

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, SEPTEMBER 4TH 2007 (CUOPM) - The Washington Archibald High School has recorded the highest average pass rate among the eight schools in St. Kitts and Nevis which wrote the 2007 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) or "CXC Exams."

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Hon. Sam Condor said Washington Archibald High School entered 132 candidates in 26 subjects in this year’s examinations."There were 692 subject entries with 573 passes, giving a pass rate of 82.8 %. This represents the highest average pass rate for the 2007 CSEC examinations," said Mr. Condor, who congratulated the school for retaining the top position in terms of overall average pass rate.

The outstanding subjects included: Visual Arts, Biology, Building Technology (Woods), Caribbean History, Chemistry, Clothing and Textiles, Electronic Document Preparation, French, Geography, Home Management, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Spanish and Technical Drawing.
"The Mathematics pass rate was 58% which is the highest among all the schools. Considering that the regional average is a mere 32%, then the 58% pass rate has some significance. All subjects returned pass rates of over 50%," he informed the nation in a radio and television address.

~~Adz:Right~~ He said that Sylvannie Tweed, with 10 subjects including 8 distinctions and Shadine Julius, 9 subjects with 7 distinctions were the most outstanding students at the Washington Archibald High School. At the Basseterre High School, 130 candidates wrote 27 subject areas, with 530 passes (grades 1-3) from 769 entries, returning an overall average pass rate of 68.9%. Outstanding pass rates of 80-100 % were returned in Agricultural Science, Biology, Clothing and Textiles, Electronic Document Preparation, English B, French, Home Management, Information Technology, Integrated science, Office Administration, Physical Education and Sports, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, and Technical Drawing.

"Caribbean History with 85 candidates, returned a 74% pass rate. This is the second largest number of candidates behind English A with (120). Mathematics entered 82 candidates. Both English and Mathematics (core areas) continue to struggle, both returning 40% pass rates. I am told that this year the CSEC regional average for Mathematics is 32% and for English is about 45%. Nevertheless, here, in St. Kitts and Nevis, we need to find solutions for ourselves and to improve the pass rates in these subjects," said Education Minister Condor.

He said there are three subject areas, however, that have performed extremely poorly at the Basseterre High School: Mechanical Engineering Technology with 3 candidates, 0% passes; Spanish, 18 candidates, 28% passes; and Building Technology (Woods), 12 candidates, 33% passes. "Obviously, there has to be an investigation with respect to these subjects, and remedial and other action taken, where required," said Mr. Condor.

He said that the best results at the Basseterre High School were obtained by Hilary Ferguson, 10 subjects with 10 distinctions, and Akeem Bacchus, 9 subjects with 9 distinctions.Mr. Condor disclosed that at the Cayon High School, 97 candidates took 26 subjects. There were 527 subject entries and 406 passing grades (1-3), representing a 77% pass rate."This is quite a good performance by the Cayon High School, where, since 2004, the school has returned pass rates of over 70% on all three occasions.

This year has produced the highest pass rate ever at the Cayon High School," said Mr. Condor. He noted that outstanding subject performances (80-100% passes) were returned in: Visual Arts, Biology, Caribbean history, Electronic Document Preparation, Electricity/Electronics, Clothing & Textiles, Food & Nutrition, French, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Spanish, Technical Drawing and Typewriting.

Akeela Connor was the most outstanding student, returning 9 subjects with 7 distinctions.
The Verchilds High School entered 44 candidates across 23 subjects. There were 185 passes from 248 subject entries, giving a pass rate of 74.59%."When we recall that last year, Verchilds High School obtained a pass rate of a mere 59.53%, the teachers of the school and the students and parents must be highly commended for the much improved performance this year. The school must now challenge itself to maintain the pass rate at 70% and above," said Minister Condor.

He said that good performances were returned in Biology, Building Technology (Woods), Chemistry, Electronic Documentation, English B, French, Home Economics Management, Information Technology, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, Social Studies, Spanish and Technical Drawing."I must especially recognize the performance in English A (English Language) returning a pass rate of 79%.
