    One pistol, 38 rounds found

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Customs and Excise Department has confirmed that the “suspicious find” made earlier today (July 14) was that of a pistol and a quantity of ammunition.

Shortly after noon, SKNVibes received information that operations at the Number One Shed at the Sea Port came to a halt because some illegal items were found there.

When contacted, the department’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Larry Vaughan, had indicated that he could not provide much information save to say that the security forces were summoned to assist in securing the area where investigations were being conducted.

He also noted that the area was cordoned off to preserve the integrity of the scene.

A press release subsequently issued by Vaughan informs that a firearm and ammunition were discovered in an unmarked package during a routine patrol.

“While conducting a routine patrol of the Transit Shed 1, Customs Officers came across an unmarked package hidden in a remote area of the said warehouse. Upon opening this package the officers found a number of sealed packets which were found to contain 1 Calibre .380 pistol, 2 lower receivers, 3 upper receivers, 4 magazine clips with 38 rounds of ammunition.”

The ammunition was further scrutinised and it was discovered that “30 of them are hollow point”.

The Criminal Investigation Department branch of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, according to the communiqué, was contacted to provide assistance in the conduct of continued investigations and also to catalogue the specifics of the find.

Commissioner of Police Austin Williams told SKNVibes that investigations into this matter are at too early a stage to determine whether charges would be preferred against anyone.
