    (Basseterre; St. Kitts): With the recent talk of Members of Parliament (MP) holding dual citizenship one resident of the No. 2 constituency, Mr. Elsroy Dorset has filed a claim against Minister of National Security, Dwyer Astaphan.

     

    The claim alleges that Minister Astaphan, along with being a citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis has also pledge allegiance to a second country, possibly Canada.

     

    According to the constitution of St. Kitts and Nevis:~~Adz:Right~~

     

    CHAPTER IV / PART 1 / Section 28 - Disqualifications for Representatives and Senators

     

    (1) A person shall not be qualified to be elected or appointed as a member if he-

     

    a) is, by virtue of his own act, under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power or state;

     

    If the Minister is found to be in breach of this law then the court could declare the parliamentary seat held by Mr. Astaphan as vacant. Mr. Dorset is an executive member of the United National’s Empowerment Party (UNEP).
