    Youth in Focus: St. Kitts
Up Close and Personal with Ms. Atisha Byron

    By Claudia Liburd

23 year-old Ms. Atisha Browne originally from Basseterre, St. Kitts
(St. Augustine, Trinidad) --- Hailing from Sugar City St. Kitts, 23-year-old Ms. Atisha Byron is currently enrolled at the University of the West Indies pursuing a Bachelor of Science in the field of Management Studies with minor studies in Finance.

Ms. Byron took some time out of her busy schedule to have a chat with SKNVibes.com about what motivated her to pursue Management studies and also her holistic view on education.
“For me management covers all aspects of the business field and it involves some extent of accounting, human resource management, economics and basic business courses that help me as an individual to be well rounded by teaching me how to manage in an ever evolving world of business.

“This is my final year and with it having just begun, it has not been to any extent hectic thus far but I know that in weeks to come I will hardly have time for myself being cramped with projects and extensive readings”, said Ms. Byron.

Byron further went on to describe her stance on education from a back drop of self advancement and she encouraged other young women to further their studies.

~~Adz:Right~~ “My take on education is a matter of self development because we once lived in a world where women were deprived of an education and to be granted such a privilege of being educated is something that every individual, especially women should take advantage of.  Education gives you individuality and self awareness and also better awareness of what is happening in your present environment and how to deal with future situations”, said Byron.
While she described the UWI experience as being hectic over the past two years,  in terms of academics she noted the coursework to be ‘challenging but always achievable’.

She continued, “For anyone who has future aspirations of being a UWI student, I say to you take with you a very open mind with every course that you choose to do and be prepared to enter a world of diversity and challenges.

After I complete my degree at UWI I hope to work for some time with a very reputable firm within my Federation, St. Kitts, Nevis to gain the necessary practical knowledge needed as a future manager and one day be able to develop my business.

“My dream of having my own business is based mainly on being able to express myself as an individual to the public while being competitive with both the present and future managers in the market. It is the chance for me also to develop my skills and my strengths as a successful manager.”

In the interim, Ms. Byron currently resides on Trinity Hall which is an all female hall of residence located on the UWI campus. Presently she holds a position on the Hall Committee as the Block Representative for the Ground Floor.

“My duties are very simple and include managing the general order and maintenance of the facilities and the comfort of the residents. Also, I am in charge of creating an atmosphere of togetherness through several activities both fun and learning.  I report back to the hall executives of any successes or failures.

“I took on this duty to also start me off with a practical sense of managing in a diverse world. The residents here are from different countries with different cultures and being able to have the opportunity as a Kittitian of leading such diversity has been a very good learning experience.   Meeting new people from different countries has been a mind blowing experience, one that I enjoy doing and would cherish forever because of the friendships I have gained”, she said.
Having completed her initial year of study in Basseterre at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College, Byron is currently enjoying her second and final year in Trinidad since leaving the land of her birth in 2006.

“To all future graduates of UWI I urge you to take in every experience that you have gained as a UWI student and use it as a guiding factor of where you want to see yourself in the future. Your university experience teaches you a lot more than academics, but allows you to gain the knowledge and the experience of being an individual in charge of all your future endeavors, no matter what hurdles you may come across”, said Ms. Byron in ending the interview.
