Patriotism and love for one’s nation was the focus during Ivor Walters Primary School’s Independence. Children interpreted their concept of Independence through speeches, song, poem and dance during their creative Independence program. The school is located in Prospect, Nevis.
The Principal, teachers, guests all enhanced children’s interpretation of Independence. St. Kitts and Nevis will celebrate its 24th Anniversary tomorrow (Wednesday). The children were told to aspire to build their country. “We celebrate the fact that we are masters of our political destiny,” the Principal Wakely Daniel said. Halsted Byron, Adviser Ministry of Culture, told the children St. Kitts and Nevis was a young nation, “probably the youngest in the Caribbean."
He told the children the process of getting Independence was a “long and hard struggle.” “Let us guard our independence.” He told the attentive children to respect the national symbols. Byron urged the children to teach their parents and adults to respect the National Anthem. He recalled incidents where some adults talk while the National Anthem is being sung but said school children had been taught to respect the National Anthem.
Clara Walters the featured speaker told the students that Independence meant freedom to provide for yourself, “and not rely on anyone to make decisions for you St. Kitts and Nevis are two beautiful islands; It is your duty and my duty and all of us to make this island a country where peace abounds.”
She cited some valued that can impact the Federation positively: putting God first, learning your lesson well, paying attention to teachers and respecting parents, teachers and classmates.
