    GREEN VALLEY GLOBAL NEWSLETTER

    GVG President , Troy Esdaille
It has been well over six months since several individuals from the Green Valley area have committed to serving their community on St. Kitts, despite the distance barrier resulting from migration overseas.

Officially launched on February 23, 2007, the purpose and objective of the organization is "to create, provide and maintain high standards of service, leadership, unity, education and social recreation, as well as to promote health, character development and citizenship while enhancing democracy.”  The group installed six (6) executive members as an interim committee namely, Troy Esdaille, President, Coreentje Phipps, Vice President, Bernardo Phipps, Financial Secretary, Kimmoy Williams, Assistant Financial Secretary, Jeffrey Phipps, PRO and Shanielle Liburd Secretary/Assistant PRO.

While it is by no means a bed of roses to build an organization, the relatively new group has sought to reach out to the local Green Valley Committee to ascertain how it can use its resources to assist the community beyond the annual festival.  To this end, the organization is currently focusing on sensitizing the international community and general public to its activities.  The following is a recap of the organization’s activities thus far and plans for further community building in the near future:

In May 2007, the group offered its financial support to one of the Green Valley queen contestants in the annual Green Valley Queen Pageant.  The GVG members believe that any forum that enhances, and not degrades the development of our young people, is worthwhile supporting.  As a result, the organization stands ready to offer its support to its young people, realizing the challenges that they face, while at the same time understanding that we must help, rather than shun the very youth who essentially play a major role in determining the social climate that we live in.
Prospective M.D. Delivers Prostate Cancer Facts

In June 2007, the organization hosted a Father’s Day Affair, which featured the Green Valley community’s very own, Monica Osborne-Stevens, an M.D. in training.  Mrs. Stevens used the opportunity to share her growing medical expertise with the audience by enlightening the fathers as to the benefits of annual/regular prostate screenings with a view to minimize the possibility of developing prostate cancer.  Mrs. Stevens was very well received and the committee looks forward to a succesful medical career for this our own daughter of the soil.

On July 21, 2007, Kennedy Magick Browne, a committed supporter of the GVG efforts in New York, who hails from McKnight, Basseterre, passed away suddenly.  His absence has struck an extremely dull note among those who knew him.  The association has conveyed its sincere condolences to his family and has vowed to ensure to keep his memory alive.

On August 25, 2007, the organization’s book drive was launched.  The objective of the book drive is to aid in supplying schools in the community with supplemental reading materials, as well as to encourage sound reading habits among our young people.  Notably, the Cayon primary school is in the process of organizing a functionable library.

~~Adz:Left~~ So far, books have been donated that are also suitable for students at the high school level, so essentially, the book drive should encompass all areas of development for our young people. The donors would be pleased to know how invaluable their contibutions have been. The book drive is scheduled to run until Saturday, September 29, 2007 and has so far been very well
    supported.

Other interesting upcoming events will be featured in a subsequent communique.

Green Valley Global continues to seek out individuals across the globe who have an interest in supporting their communities and who are also interested in offering their skills and ideas to accomplish this goal.  GVG is currently building a database of contacts and encourages individuals to seek out their friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who have long migrated from the Green Valley area and are willing to assist in the development of the community.  While the support of a “few” can get things started, it is the support of “many” that will keep things going.

Through this medium, the interim GVG commitee wishes to extend sincere thanks to all who have supported the organization's efforts thus far and we continue to encourage others to reach out and offer their support as we strive to do our community and country proud.
