(Charlestown, Nevis) --- Superintendant of Police, Joseph Liburd has made public proclamation of dissatisfaction at the attempted way in which the Independence Drag Race was to be conducted on Wednesday.

The comments came during an exclusive interview with SKNVibes.com after police and members of the general public barricaded the Long Point Road to prevent members of the Nevis Sports and Auto Club from conducting drag races.

“As far as I am concerned drag racing on the road is against the law. I am not aware of who authorized the races however no one gave the police department anything in writing to say that permission was granted to use the roads for such a purpose. A police vehicle was parked along the Long Point Road to ensure that no one broke the law”, said Liburd.

While Liburd admits that there was a mixed response from the public in terms of the police action, he also noted that all concerned acted in accordance with the law.

Liburd is quoted as saying, “It is illegal to race on the road because the laws of 1961 stipulate that no racing should be done on public roads.”

While the Superintendant of police explained to SKNVibes.com his lack of knowledge of who organized the races he did indicate that on Friday he had talks primarily with Hon. Robelto Hector who indicated to him that Cabinet agreed to allow the race.

However, unconfirmed reports reaching SKNVibes.com indicate that Raynaldo Chiverton, President of Nevis Auto Sports spoke to ‘a cross section of leaders in Nevis’ and had held several meetings which communicated to him that official permission had been granted. Further, Chiverton said he was ignorant of sections of the constitution that term such a race as illegal.
