A storage compartment of the Kawaja Food Centre, which is located just opposite the St. Kitts Breweries, in the Buckley’s area, was completely destroyed by fire on Tuesday morning, September 25th.

According to the Acting Fire Chief, Mr. James Warner, the Fire Officers responded to a call at 11:02 a.m. Upon their arrival at the Kawaja Food Centre, the western part of the store room was completely engulfed in flames. His men worked quickly and they were able to contain and then extinguish the flames in a few minutes.
It was as a result of the quick action of the Fire and Rescue Officers why a disaster of catastrophic proportions was averted.

Mr. David Kawaja, owner of the business, said he could not readily provide an estimate of the damage until he had spoken to his insurance agents.

He also said it was unfortunate that such an incident should occur but quickly noted that he intends to rebound. As a matter of fact, the fire did nothing much to disrupt the business mode of the enterprise.

According to employees of the company, a passing motorist alerted them of the fire and they quickly called the Fire Services.

The store room that was destroyed contained a quantity of foam and plastic materials. Everything was completely destroyed in the fire.

The Fire and Rescue Services are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire.
