Basseterre, St. Kitts (August 17, 2004):
The 2004 Commonwealth Youth Exchange has been described as an excellent learning and interactive forum.

The event was held in Trinidad from July 29 to August 11. Samal Duggins, Chevaughn Richards, Dwayne Rawlins, Jolanie Johnson and Kerise Watson represented the Federation.

Each participating country presented information relevant to the history and current development of their respective territories.

“We mainly walked with some brochures that feature historical information and attractive sites,” said Mr. Johnson. A copy of “Dancing in Bondage” - a book of poetry written by Hon. Jacinth Henry-Martin - as well as data on the National Dish and Wear were among popular items on display.

Kerise Watson told SKNIS that the group engaged in a number of interesting activities which exposed them to steel pan, soca, calypso, parang and a unique East Indian dance. They also attended lectures and were taken on educational tours throughout the country to sites such as an old refinery and a nature centre.

Kerise Watson noted that it was a fascinating experience and said the embracing of different cultures was especially rewarding. “They accepted our culture,” she said. “Most of them are not accustomed to our soca but on the night of our (cultural) performance they received it well and was trying to do our dance.”

The young people said they were honored to represent the Federation at such an event. Mr. Johnson and Ms. Watson had high praise for the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport for selecting them to attend the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Exchange.

A spokesperson from the ministry indicated that the representatives were chosen for their continued local involvement in youth related activities. The official challenged other youths to rededicate themselves in this regard.
