    Prime Minister  Douglas hosts National Consultation on the Economy

    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 10TH 2007 (CUOPM)
    – Thursday’s annual National Consultation on the Economy will be guided by the theme “Strengthening Human and Social Capital: Key elements in our Economic Transformation.”
     
    The all-day consultation on the economy is in keeping with the policy of the Denzil Douglas Labour Party Administration, which allows members of the public sector, the private sector and civil society to discuss and chart the way forward for the national economy.
     
    The consultation at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort is expected to receive the input of about 300 participants from financial institutions, professional organisations, parliamentary opposition members, sporting associations, trade unions, the diplomatic corps, schools, colleges and farmers associations.
     
    Group discussions will be led by members of the private sector and civil society. Major presentations at the consultation will be made on several topics including Education and Youth; Social Development; Health; The Development Bank and its role in the socio-economic transformation of the country;  An update on the Adaptation Strategy in response to the EU new sugar regime; The Fiscal Performance of the Central Government; Debt Management and Taxation issues; Investment Promotion;

    The output of the consultation will inform government’s social and economic policies for the future and will directly shape the budget of the government for the upcoming year, 2008.
     
    Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Cabinet Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Department will attend the session.
     
    Invitations to the consultation have been sent to the Premier of Nevis and the Cabinet of the Nevis Island Administration, St. Kitts Christian Council, the St. Kitts Medical Association, the St. Kitts Evangelical Association, the St. Kitts Manufacturers Association, the National Olympic Committee, the St. Kitts and Nevis Building Contractors Association, the St. Kitts Economic Society, the St. Kitts-Nevis Trades and Labour Union, the St. Kitts Taxi Association, the St. Kitts Teachers Union, the Professional Accounting Association, the St. Kitts Craft Vendors Association, the Returning Nationals Association, the People’s Action Movement, the Concerned Citizens Movement, the National Reformation Party and the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.
     
    Representatives from commercial banks, trust companies, taxi operators, bus drivers, farmers, nurses and service organisations such as the Rotary Clubs, the Youth Parliamentarians, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club are also expected to attend.

    Statutory bodies and private companies invited include CONTEC, Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis, Delisle Walwyn & Co. Ltd, the National Carnival Committee, the National Housing Corporation, Delta Petroleum, CLICO Insurance, Urban Development Corporation, St. Christopher Air & Sea Ports Authority, ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, RAMS Group of Companies, Police Credit Union, the Central Marketing Corporation, the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), Cable & Wireless, The Cable, S.L. Horsfords & Co. Ltd, TDC Group of Companies and the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. Confederation of Credit Unions, World Travel.
     
    The media houses have also been invited including ZIZ Broadcasting Corporation, Sugar City Rock, WINNFM, Radio One, KYSS FM, Labour Spokesman, Democrat Newspaper, Leewards Times, Sun St. Kitts/Nevis and the Observer Newspaper.
