    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
The Cable Company launched its “Freedom Fone” for businesses today Friday, Oct. 12, at a press conference held at the Ocean Terrace Inn.

The new service serves as a way for The Cable customers and businesses within the Federation to make calls to the US and Canada at very low rates. There is also a special plan for residential customers.

Glen “Ghost Phillip, Marketing Manager at The Cable said that the service will allow their customers to utilize their blue wave high service speed or broadband service to deliver calls.

“We at The Cable understand that the two most important communication tools for any business in today’s world are the internet and the telephone and our Freedom Fone service will be critical to your business,” he said. “This will improve productivity and performance as we guarantee our business subscribers savings of 20-95% on their traditional or conventional phone service.”

Also present at the launch was Minister with responsibility for Telecommunications and The Cable Hon. Nigel Carty.

“I believe this new development in St. Kitts and Nevis is systematic of the direction in where we would want the country to go in relation of information and technology in particular,” he said. “What we are seeing here today is apart of the Government’s plan to have the information sector liberalize which was started nine years ago. So that we can have competition within the communication sector and today we have achieved a lot.”

The Minister continued: “I believe that with the Freedom Fone if any of the services of The Cable are any indication that this service would be a service that members of the public can look forward to then I believe that this can only help to drive down the cost for businesses, in particular small businesses in the federation in cutting down the cost for them in terms of communications which is major.”

Bill Ewing, Managing Director of The Cable gave a brief history of the company and of the new service they are providing said that it’s a better way to make overseas calls for less.

~~Adz:Left~~Some of the costs per minute to some of the countries from the Federation include 20 cents to the United Kingdom and 50 cents to Japan and the Netherlands while it’s $1.25 to countries like St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Haiti.

Ewing said that they were unable to offer lower rates in the Caribbean islands because the rates were controlled by their competitors and hope that the situation would change in the near future.

The service offers three plans for businesses including the North American Plus, the North American Unlimited and North American 2500 minute plan.
