BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 15TH 2007 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has called for an examination of the twin-island Federation’s education system to ensure that the youths are provided with the right tools for operating in such an environment.

“In addition, in the face of rising youth crime, delinquency and other anti-social tendencies, we must look at ways of engaging our youths in arriving at solutions to the problems which they face today,” said Dr. Douglas as he delivered the Feature Address at the Annual Consultation on the National Economy at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort.

“For this reason we have invited several of our young people to participate in these consultations,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

Students from the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), the Sandy Point High School, the Basseterre High School, the Washington Archibald High School and the Verchilds High School were among the 300 participants at the all-day consultation.

Prime Minister Douglas noted when one examines the situation with some of the nation’s youths today, who appear to be marginalized “we are perplexed and recognize that there is an urgent need for intervention.”

“The problem of youths is not just a problem for parents or teachers or pastors. It affects all of us,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who added:

“In looking for solutions, I am not speaking to the traditional educational, social or other programmes which we normally expect to hear mentioned.

I expect us to open up wider alternatives, to focus on horizontal as well as vertical relationships, and on the sharing of information and values, to suggest different forms of coordination to the extent of the development of a system for ongoing interaction between stakeholders.

I expect that there will be differing opinions but through discussions and mutual understanding and cooperation we will be able to arrive at agreed solutions to our problems.”
