    Youth in Focus: Barbados
    Ms. Nikita Morris

    By Claudia Liburd

    19 year old Nikita Morris
(St. Augustine, Trinidad) --- Nineteen year old Ms. Nikita Morris originally of St. Micheal, Barbados is making tracks all over the University of the West Indies (UWI) in her pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in the field of Surveying and Land Information.

“The thing is I do not yet know what I plan to do with this degree but I do know that something divine pushed me into this arena.

It was not my intention to pursue Surveying and Land Information but when I received my acceptance letter it indicated that this was the program that I was accepted into. Therefore, I am using this opportunity to advance myself”, said Ms. Morris.

She continued, “Since I was young it has been my dream to attend university. I decided to come to UWI because I wanted to make something out of my life.

I wanted to prove a point to myself and know that I could get this done and I want to make a better life for myself so that I could take care of those who helped me in getting from one stage to the other in my life.”

Originally from Promenade Road, St. Michael’s Parish she attended the Louis Lynch  Secondary School which is located in Whitepark Road, St. Michael from 1999 up until 2004.

She then went on to the Comberemere Sixth Form School which is located in Waterford St. Micheal to pursue her tertiary education.

She pursued studies in the field of Physics, Pure Mathematics, Caribbean Studies and Communication Studies as well as Art and Design.

~~Adz:Right~~ Further, she completed a Cambridge course in Art and Design. After leaving Sixth Form she ventured into the world of work at the Barbados First Caribbean International Bank during the summer vacation period before travelling to Trinidad to attend the University of the West Indies.

While Ms. Morris described her experience at the UWI as fast paced she explained to SKNVibes.com how the experience has helped to shape her time management skills.

“UWI is fast. It is a fast paced environment where one is really forced to manage their time effectively whether or not they like it. It has been a great experience living on campus on my own and it has really helped me to mature. It is helping me to prepare for another stage in my life where time management, dealing with conflict, money management and interpersonal skills are essential”, said Morris.

She continued, “You have to keep your head on and know not only where you want to be but where you want to go because of all the activities that can sometimes overwhelm you.”
In ending the interview Ms. Morris urged other young persons to pursue tertiary education based on the competitive environment in the workforce.

“I would encourage other young people to further their education because you cannot get a job in this modern world without a degree. When you go through UWI life it prepares you to be a dynamic part of the workforce and it increases your level of maturity thus enabling you to be a well rounded individual”, closed Ms. Morris.
