    Romeo Cannonier
    (Basseterre; St. Kitts):
After a bench warrant was issued for his arrest Lionel Warner finally showed up in court on Thursday, Oct. 18, as a witness for the prosecution in the murder trial of Delvin Nisbett.

Romeo Cannonier of Parsons has been charged with the murder that occurred on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Dieppe Bay.

Warner told the court that he is a 29-year-old gardener and he lives in Dieppe Bay. He also stated that he knows the accused and he also knew Gavin “Magilla” Gilbert.

Warner said he met up with Cannonier at the prison in November, 2004, when he was serving time for child maintenance.

Warner was visibly uncomfortable in answering questions posed to him by the Prosecution, and in many cases he took long pauses and then said he did not understand what was being asked, especially when it came to questions about what was discussed between himself and the accused while they were both in prison.

He finally gave in, however, and told the court that Cannonier told him about the gun that he was accused of killing the police with and asked him if he had gotten a gun from Gilbert.

“He also spoke to me about ‘Hot Boy’ and told me to tell ‘Hot Boy’ don’t forget about the ‘thing’,” Warner said.

“What thing is that?” asked lead counsel Sir Richard Cheltenham.

~~Adz:Right~~ “To get rid of the girl,” replied Warner.

He said that he did not know which girl Cannonier spoke of though.

Warner said that they had the conversation in December of 2004 and said that he delivered the message.

“He then told me to tell Toolu a message which was to get rid of Magilla,” Warner added.

“And what happened to Magilla?” asked the prosecution.

    “He died,” replied Warner.

During the cross examination defense counsel Hesketh Benjamin questioned Warner’s character.

“So did you report the conversations you had with Cannonier to the prison guards? Did you tell Romeo don’t talk to you with any foolishness? Did you make a report to the police at the time?” fired Benjamin.

Warner replied ‘no’ after each question.

“Why didn’t you tell the Superintendent of Prisons what Cannonier told you, since you’re such an upright citizen?” Benjamin asked.

The witness said he had no answer for that question.

Benjamin then told Warner that he was lying and that when he and Cannonier were in prison they were not getting along but Warner implied that he was telling the truth and that Cannonier and himself were getting along.

The trial will continue on Monday, Oct. 22.
