Negligence

By: Ursula Huggins-Whitney

It is a shame caused by government negligence that during Culturama three shootings took place. Not that many years ago Culturama was celebrated peacefully by large numbers of people and there was no violence.

I believe that no matter how many police officers are in attendance at Culturama, it is the responsibility of our government – both St Kitts and Nevis - to insure that the event is not marred by violence, particularly caused by illegal weapons.

This negligent attitude, which I have cited in previous articles means our government spends inordinate amounts of time and resources trying to confiscate marijuana.rather than devoting its attention to firearms (including those brought to Nevis from St Kitts).

To me, this means our government is neglecting its responsibility to try to provide a crime free society. If this shifting of emphasis were to happen, perhaps Nevis would become peaceful again.

I am glad to hear that Inspector Brandy is working this case. He is a professional and outstanding police officer. I can only hope that all those responsible for these three shootings – as well as the February one – are brought rapidly to trial and justice is swift and final.
