    – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas pledged his Labour Government’s continued commitment to complete the task of transforming the twin-island Federation’s economy into a modern and competitive society.

He made the pledge at Tuesday’s “Face to Face,” which marked the Third Anniversary of his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government’s October 2004 victory at the polls, in keeping with the commitment of the Administration to consult with the populace on a frequent basis.

“It is in keeping with our commitment to good governance and it is in keeping with our recognition of the importance of accountability to you - the people we have been elected to serve,” said Prime Minister Douglas in his opening statement.

“As a government we thank you sincerely for the confidence you have placed in us over the years to lead this country we are blessed to be able to call ours.  We look forward to your continued support as we work to complete the task of transforming St Kitts and Nevis into a modern and competitive society,” said Dr. Douglas, who pointed out that with the support and mandate of the electorate, his Government, “we have transformed the political, social and economic landscape of this beautiful country way beyond the realities that we inherited in 1995.”~~Adz:Right~~

He boasted of his Administration’s proud record in reference to governance and accountability.

“It is this government that created a truly free press, thus fostering the lively, stimulating debate and discourse that is now possible between and amongst all members of society.  This did not exist before, but the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government made it possible.  We deliberately permitted a flowering of radio stations and newspapers, we expanded, energized, and empowered mass media in St. Kitts and Nevis, because we believe that this is important to the spirit of democracy.  This facilitates greater public scrutiny and awareness.  And in the process we have brought our country light years away from the tight and restricted media environment that existed prior to your giving us the opportunity to govern,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

Dr. Douglas disclosed also that in keeping with a promise made to introduce a brand new Electoral System, the process continues towards the goal of the Electoral Reform in a fully transparent manner in ensuring that, in St. Kitts and Nevis, “our governments will always come to power based on one person, one vote; and that in St. Kitts and Nevis, our governments will always be based on the will of the majority.”

“My government has demystified the Budget process - as was demonstrated two weeks ago in the National Consultation on the Economy at the Marriott Resort.  In a spirit of openness and transparency, we laid on the table the entire fiscal landscape and strategies, for this Consultation reflects the government’s commitment to encouraging social partnership, and promoting wide participation in national consensus building,” said the St. Kitts and Nevis Leader.
