Government pledges continued assistance to elderly, says ways must be found to save the youths

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas speaking at Tuesday's night's Face to Face at the Basseterre High School Auditorium
    BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, (CUOPM) -
The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government will continue to provide employment opportunities, care for the elderly and distribute land and improve the quality of life for all its citizens.

But Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, speaking at Tuesday’s “Face to Face,” which marked the Third Anniversary of his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government’s October 2004 victory at the polls said that in spite of the social advancement, crime plagues the twin-island Federation and ways must be found to save the youth.

“We will continue to ensure that the elderly enjoy good care in the twilight of their years. We will continue to monitor those displaced with the closure of the sugar industry – with no deterioration in their standard of living.

We will continue to assist our people to move up the social ladder through our policy of affordable homes, land distribution and access to life long learning opportunities,” said Dr. Douglas, who noted that in spite of the social advancement, “we continue to be challenged by a plague that seems to be engulfing much of the world.”

Referring to the plague of violence and criminality, in light of the type of societies that used to exist throughout the Caribbean, Dr. Douglas said that the gun-related crimes that have been seen in the region involving Caribbean youth, is of particular concern.

~~Adz:Right~~ “And so, although this is a regional and indeed global phenomenon, St. Kitts and Nevis must find a way to break the trend. We must find a way to save our youth and in the process, save our nation,” said Dr. Douglas.

He urged the entire society to unite with the law enforcement agencies and called on all individuals, young and old, rich and poor, to find a way to make their contribution to ensure that law and order are maintained in the Federation.

Prime Minister Douglas said the Government continues to work in the interest of all nationals to ensure there is growth in the economy to address the fiscal challenges faced.

“We call upon all citizens to seize the moment and take advantage of the opportunities that will be created as we transform the economy,” said Dr.
    Douglas.

He disclosed that the Minister of State has been requested to identify the services that would be required as the Federation moves towards high end tourism and the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis to be an innovative and dependable partner in this enterprise.

“We on this platform have put in place the infrastructure to make a better future possible.  You, now, must become productive by taking advantage of those opportunities that we have created, and will continue to create,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
