Press Release

St. George’s, Grenada, August 11th 2011 - Leader of Her Majesty’s Opposition, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, congratulates the officers of the Royal Grenada Police Force for their outstanding work during the carnival celebrations.

“Your presence in large numbers at every show and on the streets was indeed a deterrent to those who could have chosen to misbehave and a comfort to the patrons, citizens and visitors who were enjoying the celebrations.”

According to Dr Mitchell, “The Force must have been under pressure in recent times, with the spate of robberies and violence which rocked the country, but as true professionals you stuck to your task and performed excellently throughout the entire season with no report of any major incident.  For this we want to be on record thanking you for a job well done.”

The former Prime Minister is therefore calling on the Prime Minister and Minister for National Security to ensure that the members of the Royal Grenada Police Force are well equipped to continue their fight against crime and violence.

He made these comments while expressing concerns about the frustration many officers are facing not having basic necessities to perform their duties.

Dr. Mitchell indicated that it has been brought to his attention that the Government has not provided shoes for some officers, forcing them to look to charitable organisations including the churches who collect items for the poor and needy.

"If we are concerned about fighting crime as a nation, we must make police welfare a priority."  Dr. Mitchell added.
