Cabinet approves recommendation for another magistrate

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 31ST 2007 (CUOPM) – Steps are being taken to speed up the trials of persons charged with criminal offences.
The Cabinet of Ministers under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has approved the recommendation from Attorney General Hon. Dennis Merchant, to appoint an additional magistrate on a short term assignment to reduce the back log of Preliminary Inquiries (PI).
“This decision is in keeping with government’s proactive approach in dealing with the incidence of crime,” said Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty at the Post Cabinet briefing.
There are two magistrates in St. Kitts and one in Nevis.
There are two Magistrate Courts and one High Court in the Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex. A Magistrate Court is also in the Sandy Point Police Station.
